After years in the wilderness Surfing Illawarra is set to make its mark through the leadership of new president Paul Oyston. A former WABA president and good competitive surfer Paul has assembled a team of surfers with a vision and passion as grand as his own.
The Surfing Illawarra team has many goals in its sights however the development of junior surfing is at the forefront of its agenda. Through programs such as junior training camps located in the Illawarra utilizing the skills of it’s own personnel as well as qualified Surfing Australia representatives. These camps give junior surfers the opportunity to learn skills from peers and fellow surfers. The first camp was held in October 2007 and was a huge success.
This year also sees a new Illawarra Titles Junior Series being run over a three event format to give juniors more competitive opportunities to develop their surfing talent. The series is set to be run at three different locations from March to June and is open to all surfers under 18 years of age that live in the Illawarra area. The first competition in March will be run at a northern beach, the second in May around Wollongong and the third event in June in the south. This format gives each surfer a good opportunity to improve their skills as they see the talent of surfers from areas they would not normally surf with at beaches they would not normally surf at. The event will be run by the Surfing Illawarra team following Surfing Australia guidelines and utilizing qualified judges.
These initiatives are the beginning of steps that will see the Illawarra become a powerhouse of surfing in the future that will ultimately lead our regions junior surfers success on the worlds largest stage, the ASP world tour.
